            ARRIVAL          RELOCATION
GETTING HERE

The nearest airport to Fort Richardson is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, located about 14 miles from the base. There is no shuttle service from the base, so arrange transport or to have your sponsor meet you at the North terminal. Taxis are available from the airport. Get a receipt to submit when you begin in-processing at Fort Richardson.

If arriving by car from the airport, Fort Richardson is located off of Glenn Highway, Alaska Highway 1. Take the Boniface Parkway Exit and turn right at the light to enter the base at the Boniface Gate. The gate is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If arriving from the continental US by car, take the Alaska Highway to State Route 2, turn left in Tok, AK, onto State Route 1 through Palmer and Eagle River to Fort Richardson / Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson. This is a very very long drive.

Caution - The roads in Alaska and northern Canada are very long and remote, and drivers should fill fuel tanks at every opportunity, and be prepared for basic roadside repairs. US citizens should have a passport to re-enter the USA: military ID will not be sufficient. Also, be ready to eat and rest on the road.

There are passenger trains in Alaska, from Anchorage to Fairbanks, but none connect to the continental United States.
